My first big project and so far my most expensive cosplay.

When I first saw Guardians of the Galaxy in the cinema, I instantly knew, that I had to cosplay Peter Quill – or as you might know him: Star-Lord. I finished the first version for the Frankfurt Bookfair 2014, but wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. I met a lot of cool people because of this cosplay. But I had to redo a lot of stuff. I redid the mask almost completely, gave the blasters a new paint job and some LEDs, weathered the jacket, got myself some new boots, some new pants and finally got a working walkman! Not the original one, but a rebuild from china from the same year. I painted it blue and put the “Sony Walkman” slogan on it and now it looks almost like it is the original.

Why did you choose this character?
It was an instant decision, when I watched the movie. From the first moment I loved the character and it was a huge challenge for me. Not only to build the mask, but also to get this thing done in time, since it was my first big cosplay project.

What were the biggest challenges?
Nearly everything. I was completely new to the topic and never did a costume before (which was that complex). But the biggest challenge was the mask/helmet, because I had no idea how to start and I had to watch tons of YouTube tutorials on how to build a mask or work with a certain kind of material.

Which materials did you use?

  • Hobbycolor
  • repair putty
  • PVC pipes
  • threaded bars
  • acrylic glass
  • an Iron Man mask
  • a police helmet from the carnivals store
  • pleather (black & brown) for the belt

What do you like the most about this cosplay?
Everything. Star-Lord was my most worn cosplay in 2015 and I like every little detail. From the Walkman, to the blasters or the mask. Everything fits and I'm really proud of it.
