Shuka is part of a group cosplay which is based on the designs of Fyre-Dragon.

The armor is made of EVA foam and Worbla’s Finest Art and houses around 30 LED strips, to get the effect of flowing lava.
To get this effect, the LEDs are controlled by an Arduino Due, which is situated in the back plate of the armor.

The weapon is inspired by the japanese Naginata and can be detached, to have a sword and a staff. Since Shuka is a master of weapons he can handle any weapon, he gets his hands on.

Why did you choose this character?
Fyre-Dragon and Cora approached me with the idea of this cosplay group and I said yes. The design is made by Fyre-Dragon (with some little changes made by me).
I love the design and the story of the character, and I also love the fact, that Shuka is a weapons master.

What were the biggest challenges?
Definitely the LEDs. The writing of the code took me about a week or so. The outcome wasn't like I expected it to be, but I had no time left. I redid the code for Hanami 2016, now it is just as I wanted it to be in the first place.

Which materials did you use?

  • EVA foam
  • Worbla’s Finest Art
  • acrylic glass (the base of the blade)
  • polyester putty (for the smooth finish of the blade)
  • styrofoam
  • wooden staff
  • bayonet joint
  • pleather
  • a lot of cables and LED strips
  • Arduino Due

What do you like the most about this cosplay?
The LEDs in the armor. You don't often see armors with LEDs, less with programmed LEDs, so this is one of my favourite parts of the cosplay. And the weapon is pretty cool, because it is a two-in-one-weapon.
